Began in a group beginner Mandarin class with Carrie as teacher. That was the start of an 11 year journey, discovering that not only did I want to speak Mandarin, but also to read and write characters and to understand more fully Chinese culture. Under Carrie’s tutelage, I was proud to pass the HSK Level 3 written and HSK intermediate speaking. Carrie also taught Chinese to two of my children, including taking one of them through to an A* in IGCSE Chinese and an excellent 6 in IB Mandarin.
Carrie is a highly qualified teacher of Chinese, with a superb knowledge of Chinese culture, art and history. Her excellent, nuanced English enables her to explain complex concepts clearly. Add to this her personal qualities of diligence, kindness, creativity and enthusiasm and she makes an exceptional teacher. I highly recommend her as a teacher for both children and adults.

Carrie is an excellent teacher. Not only have I improved my Chinese skills on paper, but I have also improved them through conversations that include real-world context. I even learn about the history behind each character, discover idioms and learn about China. Although I am the only person in my family who speaks and studies Chinese, I acquired an A* or 99 on my IGCSE Foreign Language test!

In Middle School I took “Mandarin as a Foreign Language”. At the beginning of Grade 9, I moved up a level to “IGCSE Mandarin as a Second Language”, and I could barely understand half of what was taught in class at first. My parents found Carrie who became my “IGCSE Mandarin as a Second Language” 1:1 tutor throughout Grades 9 and 10. With Carrie’s guidance, I went from struggling to thriving. By the end of Grade 10, I achieved an A in the official IGCSE exam.
Carrie has a deep understanding of the IGCSE curriculum. No matter what topic, question, or task I brought to her, she was able to teach it clearly and effectively. Her approach was pragmatic and always tailored to my skill level. She had a large collection of past papers and targeted exercises which were instrumental for my exam preparation. Her flawless standard Mandarin pronunciation also helped sharpen my listening and speaking skills.
Carrie was always responsive, encouraging, and friendly. She put in a lot of effort to make every lesson engaging and enjoyable. It’s not easy to make a teenager boy like Mandarin tuition, but Carrie did it. I’m grateful for her dedication, expertise, and the positive energy. I highly recommend Carrie to anyone interested in improving their Mandarin skills or grades.
